Considering that IMadden NFL 2002/I is the Xbox's first contribution to the series, it's a triumphant debut indeed. Everything that we've come to know and love about the console Madden games has made it to the Xbox. This version even has minimal but noticeable upgrades from the PlayStation2 edition. p Gameplay is almost exactly the same as IMadden NFL 2002/I on the other consoles, with key differences relating to the enormous Xbox controller. If you're not a fan of the Microsoft controller's ill-placed black-and-white buttons, you'll be happy to see they aren't used too frequently. p The artificial intelligence exhibited by the Xbox-controlled players seems to be equivalent to that of the very smart PS2 version. In other words, expect a slow-paced, competent game that will challenge you for every yard.p The graphics, however, have been slightly tweaked for the extra pixel-pushing abilities of Microsoft's console. Helmets get scratched and dirt, grass, and other filth accumulates on player uniforms. Players are somewhat sharper and smoother than in the great-looking PS2 version, plus people with widescreen TVs can view the entire offensive and defensive lines without having to pan left or right. All in all, the improvements over the PS2 version are slight, but they do add to the atmosphere of the game. p Also retained are the two-minute drills, teaching modes, and Madden Cards from the other versions. Sadly, repetitive and droll announcing by Pat "What Game Is He Watching?" Summerall and John "Blandly Stating the Obvious" Madden didn't get upgraded. When Microsoft released INFL Fever 2000/I on the PC in 1999, it gave IMadden/I a serious run for its money. It's been a few years, but IFever/I and IMadden/I are once again going head-to-head on the Xbox, and once again IFever/I proves itself a serious threat to EA's perennial football powerhouse. That's not to say that INFL Fever 2002/I is a perfect game, because it isn't, but it does offer great graphics, decent AI, and plenty of bone-crunching gameplay. p INFL Fever 2002/I features several gameplay modes, including practice, single game, and season, which itself contains a couple of different options, including dynasty and fantasy challenge. IFever 2002/I has a full NFL license and includes all 31 current NFL teams--and 15 fantasy teams--along with all the current stadiums. Dynasty mode is where most players will find themselves, as this mode lets you manage all aspects of your team, including signing and cutting players, negotiating trades, and making sure that your team comes in under the salary cap. p A great feature in dynasty mode is Dynamic Player Performance, which adjusts players' ratings (which determine how well they play) based on past game performances. So if you have a second-string running back who rattles off three or four great games in a row, his rating will increase, which should keep him performing at that high level. On the flip side, if a player has several poor games, his rating will decrease. p Because it was designed specifically for the Xbox (unlike IMadden NFL 2002/I, which was ported to the Xbox from the PlayStation2 version), INFL Fever 2002/I looks awesome.
